Polycarbonate is used in products that largely end up in landfill. As polycarbonate does not biodegrade, it slowly leaches toxic chemicals into the environment. Recycling moves the material from becoming waste and into being useful again, illustrating responsible consumption and production.
r32 is a recycled polycarbonate material used for sustainable injection eyewear.
Composition & Production
This material comes from recycled compact discs and electrical appliance cases.
Polycarbonate is one of the most commonly used petrol based injection plastics in eyewear. The process of injecting the plastic into moulds generates a significant amount of waste. bbase’s r32 uses this waste to re-introduce it back into the supply chain at the maximum value.
Benefits
Heat Resistant
Can be fully recyclable if left in original finish
Uses post-consumer waste
Minimal wastage throughout the process
Material durability means longer product life and less material ending up in landfill
To Note
Recycling limited to 1-2 times as material progressively becomes more brittle.
Some finishes will render r32 unrecyclable post use
Resin ID code 7 – some municipalities will recycle this material, other do not.
Certifications
Global Recycled Standard Certified
